The Agency Accessibility Statement:

The SCDE is committed to making its electronic and information technologies accessible to individuals with disabilities by meeting or exceeding the requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. 794d), as amended in 1998. Section 508 is a federal law that requires agencies to provide individuals with disabilities equal access to electronic information and data comparable to those who do not have disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. These Accessibility Guidelines are in place to assist South Carolina Department of Education staff ensure the best online experience for those accessing online agency content and follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2). 

  • All public-facing SCDE documents - letters, memos, reports, guidelines, newsletters, videos, and presentations - must meet the agency’s minimum standard of accessibility.  
  • All documents produced or used by the SCDE are considered public records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), therefore a strong attempt should be made to ensure accessibility of documents that may only be intended for use within the agency
  • The minimum standard for any public-facing text-only document is that it has no errors when scanned using the originating program’s accessibility checker.
  • When a non-accessible public-facing document must be published, a separate, accessible version of the document as a printable or viewable link must be included.
